The printhead heats the ribbon (thermal transfer ribbon) and transfers ink onto the label. The image is more durable and more resistant to heat, moisture, and chemicals. The ribbon is a consumable and must be ordered along with the labels.

The wrong material on the wrong printer produces an illegible image, damages the printhead, and wastes ribbon needlessly. That is why the material choice for thermal labels is even more critical than for industrial labels, where it has to be compatible with both the printer and the environment the product lives in.
Thermal printers are more sensitive to roll format than industrial label applicators. The core, tape width, roll diameter, gap between labels, and sensor mark position all have to match your printer's specification exactly. If the roll does not fit, the printer will not recognize it and will not print.

The image is economical but fades after 3 to 6 months, making it ideal for scales and POS terminals. Thermal Transfer (TT) uses an ink ribbon that is transferred to the label with heat. The image is more durable and resistant to heat and moisture, but requires a ribbon as an added consumable. TT is the choice for industry, logistics, and anywhere a label has to last longer than six months.
Yes. Rotary die-cutting cuts labels to any dimension and shape, rectangular, round, oval, or irregular. Standard dimensions are in stock for fast delivery, nonstandard ones are made to your specification. For nonstandard shapes, we make a custom die-cutting tool, which is a one-time cost. For repeat orders, we use the same tool at no additional cost.
For direct thermal printers, use ECO paper with a thermal-sensitive coating that does not require a ribbon. For thermal transfer printers, use TOP paper with a WAX or WAX/RESIN ribbon for standard conditions, or PP/PET synthetics with a RESIN ribbon for moisture and chemicals. Yes. Štamparija RP manufactures its own thermal transfer ribbons in all standard types: WAX for paper labels, WAX/RESIN for coated papers, and RESIN for synthetic materials. All ribbons are available in standard widths. You can order labels and ribbons together in the same shipment, with guaranteed mutual compatibility. There is no need to look for a separate ribbon supplier.
The most common causes are the wrong sensor detection type (gap instead of black mark, or the reverse), an incorrect tape width, the wrong core diameter, or a material that is not compatible with your printing mode. For blank labels in standard dimensions, the minimum is low because there is no prepress or printing involved. For semi-printed labels with flexo printing, the minimum depends on the dimensions and the number of colors, similar to industrial labels. For blank labels in standard dimensions, delivery can take 2 to 3 business days since they are in stock.
