Thermal transfer printing uses a heated printhead that melts the pigment layer off the ribbon's polyester base and transfers it onto the label. The result is a sharp, legible, durable print that outperforms direct thermal printing in longevity, light resistance, and resistance to mechanical wear.
A polyester base 3 to 6 microns thick carries a pigment layer on one side (WAX, WAX-RESIN, or RESIN formulation) and a protective back coating on the other, which protects the printhead from wear.
The printhead contains hundreds of micro heating elements that activate in milliseconds. Where an element is heated, the pigment melts and transfers to the label; where it stays cold, the ribbon passes through untouched. WAX melts at a lower temperature, RESIN at a higher one.
The pigment bonds permanently to the label surface. Unlike direct thermal printing, where the print fades under light and heat, a TT print stays stable for months and years, with barcodes that remain scannable.
The head type determines which ribbon you can use. Standard ribbons do not produce a quality print on a Near Edge head, and Near Edge ribbons are not designed for flat head printers.
The head sits horizontally relative to the label. This is the most common printer type in logistics, warehousing, retail, and industry. It uses standard WAX, WAX-RESIN, and RESIN ribbons. IN winding, with the pigment on the inside, for SATO, CAB, Datamax, and Citizen, or OUT winding, with the pigment on the outside, for Zebra, Intermec, and Toshiba TEC.
The head sits at an angle and touches the label at the edge. It allows printing on thicker materials and higher speeds. It requires specialized Near Edge ribbons, since standard ribbons do not produce a quality print on this head type. Also used for TTO printing, directly onto flexible packaging.

The wrong ribbon on the wrong printer produces an unreadable print and can damage the head. The wrong winding direction physically will not fit the printer. The wrong width does not cover the label or leaves adhesive on the head. Give us these five parameters and compatibility is resolved from the first delivery.
The manufacturer and model determine the head type (flat head or near edge), the winding direction, and the core size. Zebra uses OUT winding, while SATO and CAB use IN. If you don't know the model, send a photo of the printer and the current ribbon roll.
IN means the pigment is on the inside of the roll, OUT means it's on the outside. The wrong winding direction leaves no print because the pigment never touches the label. This is the most common mistake among customers switching ribbon suppliers.
Desktop printers use 12.7 mm cores, industrial printers use 25.4 mm. Cores can be cardboard or plastic, with notches for locking in place. Length is matched to the printer's capacity and how often the ribbon needs to be replaced.
The ribbon must be at least 2 mm wider than the silicone backing to protect the head from direct contact with the adhesive. The label material, paper, PP, or PET, determines the ribbon type. Tell us the silicone width and material, and we'll supply the exact width and formulation.
For new customers or a new ribbon-and-label combination, we send a sample roll. You check print quality, barcode readability, and scratch resistance. We move forward with the full order only after your confirmation.
